How to Stay Motivated to Blog with a Full-Time Job

TL;DR: You don’t need more free time to blog with a full-time job — you need a system for the time you already have. Steal back 15-30 minute pockets (lunch breaks, post-bedtime, commute voice memos, waiting rooms), give each pocket one job instead of trying to do it all at once, and lean on systems like batching, templates, AI-assisted outlines, and pre-written email funnels to make that time go further. Then let go of the pressure to post daily, be everywhere, and make everything perfect. Progress isn’t linear — pick back up when you can, and use the 15 minutes you’ve got.

• You’re not missing time; you’re missing a system. Stop waiting for a free afternoon that isn’t coming and start using the 15-30 minute pockets you already have — lunch breaks, post-bedtime windows, commute voice memos, waiting rooms.
• One task per pocket of time. Trying to write, design, schedule, and promote all in one sitting is how you burn out fast. Pick one job per pocket and let the pieces add up.
• Perfectionism is a time thief. You don’t have to post daily, be on every platform, or have flawless graphics before publishing. Done and out the door beats perfect and stuck in your drafts folder.

We all know those bloggers. You know the ones I’m talking about – they wake up, write their daily affirmations, go for a morning walk, relaxingly drink a cup of coffee, and only then do they get started working on their blogging business. They get to focus all day on it, because it is their only job.

I’m not throwing shade at them. Heck, I’m even jealous of this business schedule, because we certainly aren’t doing that ideal, lovely morning routine of those bloggers over here, honey. Over here, we are immersed in full-on chaos, caused by a kiddo, three dogs, and a full-tIme job as an ICU nurse, on top of my blogging business. I’m fine. It’s fine. Everything’s fine.

My life is pretty busy outside of blogging, and it sounds like I don’t have a lot of time to blog with a full-time job. You’re right, I don’t. But I’m going to tell you how I do it all. So if you’ve been sitting there thinking, “I would totally start a blog if I just had more time” — I need you to hear this loud and clear:

You are not missing time. You’re missing a system for the time you already have.

Let’s fix that.

The Time Myth That’s Keeping You Stuck

A lot of blogging advice makes you believe that running a blogging business is always like the scenario I mentioned above. Dreamy. But let me tell you, my life certainly isn’t like that, and I’m betting yours isn’t either. Here in real life, we’ve got kids running amok, dogs thinking they are about to starve if dinner is 3 minutes late, and a full-time job that laughs when you try to sit down and rest. Ain’t nobody got 3 uninterrupted hours to commit to anything, let alone something like a BLOG!

So the goal in this life held together by dry shampoo and spite is not “finding the time”.  It’s stealing the time back.

Secret Time to Blog With a Full-Time Job

You are going to build a blogging business the same way I did it – with pockets of time. You can find pockets of time to work on your blogging business during:

• Lunch break: (hey, hey, hey! 15-30 min, 5x/week looks a lot like consistent progress to me!
• The post-bedtime window: I get a lot of my best work done after my son falls asleep and the house is quiet.
• Voice memos during your commute: Have an idea while you’re driving in the car? Create a voice memo right then and transcribe it later.
• Use times you are waiting (waiting in line at the store or doctor’s office, the school pickup line for your kids, on hold on the phone). Your phone is in your hand already; use it to your advantage.

Listen, none of these examples may feel like enough time to accomplish anything. But the goal here is to make deposits into your blogging business as you are able, not doing everything at one time.

Blog With a Full-Time Job With Systems

Systems don’t buy your time back, but they do make how you spend your existing time more efficient.  Here are the systems that are a must-have in my business blog with a full-time job.

Batching Content

Use one day to batch write copy, another day to create graphics, and another day to schedule graphics on social media. Batching content like this allows my brain to stay focused on that day’s designated task, instead of hopping around from task to task all in one day.

AI Assistance

Do not use AI to replace your voice or ask it to write content for you. Anyone can regurgitate some robot garbage that they got from AI. But only you can sound like you and explain things the way you do. Use your unique voice to your advantage.

This doesn’t mean you can’t ever use AI. In fact, I encourage you to use it to generate ideas for your content and offers. I use AI to create outlines for my blog posts, and then I fill in the actual content in my own voice.

Templates

My blog business wouldn’t function without the use of templates. I use them for everything. Canva graphics, Flodesk emails, Pinterest pins, Instagram posts, digital products, and more. Templates prevent me from starting from scratch every time I start a new project.

Pre-Written Email Funnels

When someone signs up for a freebie on my website, I have an email delivery sequence automatically scheduled to send to them, so I can begin nurturing them from day one. After those initial delivery emails are finished, the automation enrolls the person into my evergreen nurture sequence to continue being top of mind. I still send out manual newsletters to my mailing list, but I also have automations in place to keep my audience toasty warm, even when I’m not manually sending an email.

The One Thing Rule

This is related to the concept of batching content, but if you are trying to write a blog post, schedule an email newsletter, create graphics, schedule pins on Pinterest, and work on your next digital product, you aren’t going to get much accomplished with the limited time that you have. Ask me how I know, as I have 47 browser tabs open.

Instead of squirreling out on 7 different tasks that you want to get done, pick one task per pocket of time. Work on one blog post section during your lunch break.  Write the copy for a sales page after the kiddos go to sleep. Schedule pins to be posted while you’re waiting in the school pickup line.

What You Have to Let Go Of to Blog With a Full-Time Job

​You do not have to post every day. In fact, if you are, I would encourage you to schedule those posts out ahead of time and use that daily posting time to go towards something else. This is the neat thing about scheduling tools and content planners: you don’t have to be “present” every day, but you can still appear to be.

You do not have to be on every platform. If you are on multiple platforms, I would really dial that back and select one or two platforms to really focus on consistently, rather than being everywhere at once inconsistently. Once you scale and have a team, go bananas on whatever platform you want. But while it’s still just you at the beginning of your blog business, focus on creating quality content on one platform.

You do not have to have the perfect graphics and the perfect copy and the perfect everything before you can publish. Perfectionism is a thief of your time! Do it messy. Just get it done. That doesn’t mean half-ass your work. It means if you nitpick every little thing that may not even have a direct impact on moving the needle in your business, you’re wasting your time and leaving money on the table.

Your Objections, Handled

“But what if I miss a day/week?” – And? Pick back up where you left off and get to work! Progress isn’t linear. I have low-energy days where I can’t even focus on blogging. But I don’t dwell on it or treat it as a failure; I just pick back up where I left off and get started again.

“What if my pocket of time gets interrupted?” – Welcome to parenting/your job/your life. You’re going to get interrupted, but you’ll be farther along than if you hadn’t tried at all, and that is the goal.

“What if I don’t even have 15 minutes some days?” – Listen, coming from a mom and a full-time ICU nurse, some days and even weeks are just survival. I get it, and it’s okay to have those times too. Give yourself some grace and pick back up when you do have the time.

Here’s the truth I want you to walk away with: I built this entire blog with a full-time job and in between toddler negotiations. It didn’t happen because I had it all figured out, or because I had some magical extra three hours nobody told you about. I built it in stolen pockets of time that I found in my day.

You can do the exact same thing. I promise you, the time you’re waiting for — that mythical free afternoon where everything’s calm, and your brain isn’t fried — is not coming. And it doesn’t need to.

So stop waiting for more time. You have full permission to work with the 15 minutes you’ve actually got, do one thing at a time, and let the rest wait.
